Review: Cinder

Cinder
Cinder by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Having a hard time rating this book. On the one hand, I enjoyed it a lot and didn't really wanna put it down so it was good ... on the other hand I have so many problems with it.

Mostly the world building. It could've been so much better. We never get explanations for why the world is in the state it is, why cyborgs are treated the way they are, what happened in WW4, how does the ownership of cyborgs work, and so on, and so on ... Come on, indulge us a little! It was a cool world, we could've survived hearing a little more about it.

Also, the foreshadowing? Not good. I mean you could figure out everything that was gonna happen in the book after the first couple of chapters, and not just because it's based on Cinderella, but because there are some pretty not subtle hints. "My foot doesn't fit!", "Why this car looks like a pumpkin!", "There is a random lost princess who was born the same time as me!". Come oooon.

But still, I liked it, despite its flaws, and I am gonna read the rest of the series. I already have book two, and I'm excited to get started on it!

Busy busy busy doing nothing at all

Busy busy busy doing nothing at all.

Good times. I'm stressing over nothing ...

Don't bother to call.

Mmmm, ännu ett whinigt inlägg a'la Ell, min specialitet. Just the way mama likes 'em.

Review: 11.22.63

11.22.63
11.22.63 by Stephen King

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mmmm, I liked this book. In the beginning I was like "omg I really wanna know how the world would change if JFK wasn't shot!!" and then I remembered that it's just fiction and even if the MC succeeded I'd only get to see Stephen King's version of history. Heh. Guess I got too caught up in the premise.

It is a great premise though! Time travel in fiction is always tricky, because it's waaay too easy to fuck things up or write something that just doesn't make sense. But I like the way time travel works in this book, although I guess there were some things that worked just because it was convienant to the story.

It's a long book, and part of the reason it's not getting five stars is because sometimes certain events are described a little too much, and sometimes, to show just how much of a good time the MC is having, it's so over-the-top happy it's not really believeable. And this is a book about time travel, so that's saying something.

I was a bit scared about the ending - how do you end a book like this??? - but I really enjoyed how it all "worked out" (more or less ...) in the end. King said in the afterword his son came up with it, and from what I've heard about King's endings in other books, it's probably a good thing he stuck to that.

Review: Gone girl

Gone girl
Gone girl by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

SPOILERS AHEAD

I enjoyed the shit out of this book. Basically by the first chapter I knew I didn't like the main character, Nick, or as I like to call him, Nick the Dick, but hey, I've read so many books where I didn't like the main character that I figured I'd get through it. The thing is though, not liking Nick didn't make me enjoy the book less, which is rare. Usually when I dislike a main character the narrative tends to make him seem so very nice and amazing and have all other characters fawn over him, but not this time.

And then of course there's the twist half-way through the book and for me that made the book even better BECAUSE NOW I HAD TWO MAIN CHARACTERS TO HATE. This sounds like I'm being ironic, but no, I really liked that I could root for a person who was genuinely bad in this book. There wasn't really a good guy to be rooting for.

Plus, let's be real, while she lied about so many things, Desi was actually keeping her hostage, despite doing it in the nicest way possible. Sure, there may have been another way for her to get out of it, and she lied about what happened, but let's not pretend like he wasn't a bad person too. Everyone was a bad person, I loved it.

The ending though ... I don't know. I can't really say that I liked it, but neither did I dislike it. When I can't decide on those things I usually just ask myself: can I accept this ending? Does it fit with the rest of the story? I thought it did, so I'm not complaining about it. But some other resolution might have made me give it five stars instead of four.

Oh, well. A blurb at the beginning of the book said that it would make you want to stay single, and to quote a friend of mine: "i felt like remaining single after reading it. i also felt like remaining single before i read it. but a bit more after." That is the best damn review I've seen.

Review: Räkna med Simpsons

Räkna med Simpsons
Räkna med Simpsons by Simon Singh

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mmmmm, books about math. I mean, I'm pretty good at math, which means I'm better than a lot of my friends, but that there are those who has gone on to study math and they are obviously superior to me. But more importantly, I *like* math, which is hardly a common opinion.

I especially like books like this one, that makes me realize just have awesome math can be, and how much of a science it is. You're never really taught that stuff in school though, are you? Then it's just 'calculate this, calculate that', with no explanation for how those things were figured out.

This book is about The Simpsons and math of course, and while I'm not a huge fan of Simpsons, I've seen enough to understand it (but, um, who the fuck hasn't?). I can't say I've noticed any of the math references mentioned in this book, but I kinda wanna get my hands of some of those eps just to look for them.

I am, however, a big fan of SImon Singh, so it's hardly surprising I enjoyed the book. He explains science in a really good way, and if you don't understand exactly what is going on, you usually understand enough to keep up with the "story". Which I enjoy. I'll probably reread some of his other books this year, like the Big Bang book or The Code Book, which I've never read but heard great things about.

Anyway, very enjoyable book, whether or not you're into maths or The Simpsons, I'd say.

Review: Kärlek på skotska

Kärlek på skotska
Kärlek på skotska by Alexander McCall Smith

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I must say I liked the second book better. I understand that, finishing the second book as he did, it was hard to go on in the same manner in this one, and I kinda felt the book suffered for it. As much as I hate Bruce, I kinda loved hating on him.

And in general, it was not so much about Scotland Street in this one, was it? The only person living there, except for Bertie but he hardly counts, was Antonia and she's hardly a long-term resident. So that was a shame.

Dominica living with the pirates was also pretty weird: I feel McCall Smith wrote himself into a corner with that one. Maybe it would've been better just to skip that entire year and start when she got back again? I don't really know.

I'm not sold on Pat getting together with whine master Matthew either. I was hoping they'd both find someone better suited for them, but oh well...

Espressoberättelser by Alexander McCall Smith

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this more than the first book, probably because I was a bit more familiar with the concept and the characters and knew what to expect.

Bertie's parts are still my favourite, and it was nice to see things get better for him. I also liked seeing Bruce fuck up, although of course he was a smug ass by the end still. Oh well, you can't get everything.

I didn't really like Matthey in this though: I found him sympathetic in the first book, but this hatred of Janis in this one was a bit too much. And Pat suddenly wanting him when he was rich? Plz...

You could tell McCall Smith didn't plan on writing more in this series (he even says it in the foreword), so it'll be interesting to see what happens in book three, but I'm sure he'll make it work. I've seen other series going on for longer than expected with good results, I've no reason to doubt that this will.

Review: The Return of the King

The Return of the King
The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Best book ever? Best book ever. Everyone is just kicking ass and taing names and being funny and cute at the same time. The little hobbits doing their best pretttty much just to survive and accidentally saving the world in the process.

The Scouring of the Shire is still one of my fave parts, because wow these tiny babies have grown up and can totally take care of themselves. And it's the ultimate proof that you don't wanna fuck with hobbits, because when they get pissed ... they get pissed.

When I finished Chriss asked if it was as good as usual, and it was. You know it's a good book when you wanna reread it as soon as you finish: buuut I try to limit myself to once every year. That, um, is enough.

Basic insikt

I know, shocking, right?

Review: The Two Towers

The Two Towers
The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I always think that book four (the second part of this book, that's only about Frodo and Sam) is the weakest part of the trilogy, and while that may be true it is never as bad as I think it is. First, it's really short, just a little over 100 pages, and secondly: it has some really good parts. Faramir, for example, is a amazing when he shows up, plus anything concerning Gollum and fish is cute and funny.

And then they enter Shelob's lair, which is another good part because shit happens and then we get to hear orcs interact with each and I actually like that a lot. It's cool to see that they are longing for a time after the war ends when things calm down. I can so buy that there are orc farmers somewhere off in a deep part of Mordor.

And now, of course, we get to the best book of all three!! Return of the Kings. Returns are always the best, be it jedis or kings.

Review: The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)
The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pippin remains my fave book character, together with Gandalf of course. Don't get me wrong, I like movie!Pippin as much as anyone, but he is funny in a very different way in the books, and I always forget it. The delight of rereading books.

I don't even know what else to say???? I loved it, as usual??? Idk. I guess Tom Bombadill is still my least fave part, ESPECIALLY since right after that they arrive to Bree and then following two chapters are some of the best in all three books. But I do like it when Frodo, Sam and Pippin are hiking through the Shire, and I love the conspiracy unmasked as well. Especially since that part was totally left out of the movies.

I still laugh whenever Galadriel asks for Gandalf, and she doesn't even say the exact line from the movie. To Isengard, to Isengard...

Vissa dagar

Men i alla fall.)

Shows what I know.

Tolkien

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I four-starred it last time, because I thought "I don't love it as much as LotR", but sticking to that criteria I couldn't five-star anything else, except maybe Harry Potter. And now that all the movies are out, I do enjoy this book much more. Hearing Thorin's lines spoken in Richard Armitage's voice improves everything.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with the book being turned into several movies. So much happens that keeping it as one book would just make it very choppy and fast-paced. Maybe three movies wasn't ideal, especially not given how rushed the beginning of the second one was, but I much prefer it this way. There's no rule stating that every book adapted ever must just have one movie, in fact I feel lots of movies would improve by being split into several (I would GLADLY have watched 14 Harry Potter movies had they all been as good as the last two).

I would personally have ended the second movie when Bilbo and the dwarves arrive in Lake-Town, although calling Desolation of Smaug wouldn't have worked out then. But there is enough action going down in Mirkwood for them to stay there most of a movie, especially with the Gandalf subplot going on. That way we'd start the third movie with the dwarves going off to provoke Smaug, and they wouldn't have to drag the Battle of Five Armies too much. Like, make it a cool battle, sure, but few movies can deal with them focusing on just one single battle like that. Just look at The Two Towers, especially before the extended.

Still, I would never have loved this book as much as I do without the movies, so I'm just happy they exist, in whatever form they do. The same way, I suppose, I wouldn't have loved LotR as much as a tween without those movies ...
